Note (1) : EARLY and LATE refer to the build date of the bike, as there is an ECU change around April 2000, from what we can make out. There is no given VIN for the change, so it’s a case of check the ECU and see. The difference between the ECU’s relate to the chip type used. Bosch changed from a Bosch specific chip to a generic chip ( same as Ducati, Guzzi, etc ) at this time. Externally, the ECU are visually ( apart from the numbers ) and functionally the same. Given as BMW don’t sell chips, if you need a new genuine chip, you must buy a complete ECU. So it doesn’t matter which one you get, they all work exactly the same. It only matters which one you have when fitting an aftermarket chip.

The identifying numbers are as below. There is three possible numbers for an "early" ECU. The photo below shows which number we are looking at.

EARLY : 1 342 509
1 342 982
7 652 086

LATE : 7 655 473

The ECU in this picture is a "late", number 7 655 473.
